Lesson 1

American Colony Design Challenge

Students research Colonial American technology and collaborate to build a historically accurate cardboard model to present to the class.

History

Students explore Colonial American life and technology, researching tools and inventions that shaped early American society.

Design Engineering

Students apply basic engineering principles to plan and construct a cardboard model, thinking through structure, function, and design.

Art

Students bring their research to life through hands-on model making, translating historical references into a physical, visual form.

Lesson 3

Math Mandalas Design Challenge

Students choose a rock, research its physical properties, and sculpt a 3D papier maché sculpture that represents their rock's characteristics.

Earth Science

Students research their rock's type, luster, formation, and density to understand how it was created and where it comes from.

Math

Students apply basic engineering principles to plan and construct a cardboard model, thinking through structure, function, and design.

Art

Students translate their scientific research into a 3D sculpture, where every material and color choice has to reflect the actual properties of their rock.

Student Worksheet

The student worksheet guides learners through researching their rock's type, luster, and composition before moving into the making process. Visual step-by-step instructions walk students through building and painting their sculpture, with a final reflection section where students document their artistic choices and connect them back to the science.

Lesson Outcome

Each student produces a hand-sculpted 3D representation of a real rock type, built from paper maché and painted to reflect the actual color, texture, and form of their chosen rock.
